This position is in the Division of Maintenance, National Park Service, National Capital Parks-EAST in Greenbelt, MD. The primary purpose of the position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent utilizes journeyman knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.
National Capital Parks-East (NACE) consists of 16 units and additional associated partner and concession sites spread across the urban and suburban areas of the District of Columbia and Maryland. NACE contains a wide range of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources. Park visitors are ethnically and culturally diverse, coming from all parts of the world, and speaking many different languages. The various sites have strong connections with local communities as well as attract national and international visitation. Due to the proximity to the Capital, park sites often have high political interest and are visited by U.S., state, local, international, departmental, and agency dignitaries and staff.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures 0 to 100 degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.

Suitable for Federal employment as determined by a background investigation Incumbent must wear a National Park Service Uniform Possess and maintain a valid State or District of Columbia Class B CDL Duties include but are not limited to:The majority of the time will be spent performing duties in carpentry, electrical and plumbing trade areas.
ELECTRICAL: Working from building plans, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, plans, lays out, troubleshoots, and completes electrical work with little or no technical advice. Interprets and applies the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings. Installs or repairs electrical systems required in the construction or maintenance of family housing units, buildings, quarters, offices, or shops.
PLUMBING: Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers. Works from building plans, blueprints and sketches to plan and lay out the routing placement, slant, slope fall and proper operation of systems and equipment. Perform trade methods and techniques, such as wiping and pouring lead joints, seating equipment, and installing any combinations of couplings, unions, and joints needed for proper operation of the systems. Constructs, alters, modifies or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities.
CARPENTRY: Constructs, alters, modifies or repairs a wide range of features in building, quarters and other facilities. Constructs storage areas, work rooms, and offices with existing buildings including framework, rafters, joist, insulation, sheet rock, paneling, doors, windows, and flooring. Build small structures and replaces deteriorated sections of existing structures. Constructs interior and exterior siding and roofing. Installs interior and exterior trim materials. Constructs and installs cabinets and builds countertops utilizing formica or wood. Installs floor coverings such as tile, linoleum, and carpet.
Matches or creates exact reproductions of various components of historic buildings and fixtures. Plans computes, and lays out projects and identifies material needs. Work from complex instructions blueprints, sketches and building code. Operate various carpentry equipment and tools (e.g. routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses, etc.). Also operates various power hand tools such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shapers, sanders, nail gun, combustion saws, etc.
MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR: Safely operates a wide variety of maintenance vehicles such as cubic yard, 6-wheel drive dump truck, with GVW 42,000; 4x4 pick-up trucks; 1/2 ton to 1 ton, diesel-powered, 52,000 GVW, three axle trash compacting vehicle; 34,500 GVW pumper truck with 600 gallon water tank, etc. Responsible for snow removal operation on Baltimore Washington Parkway of tandem axle dump truck with removal attachments 52,000 GWV.
EQUIPMENT OPERATION: Blade patches road surfaces. Removes ice and snow from mountainous roadways, parking areas, and congested residential streets at night, sometimes under adverse weather conditions. Clears sand and gravel from road surfaces after storms.

REQUIREMENTS:
Appointment will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation.
